Formats in the collection: fun facts from the Library Survey

Welcome to this month’s installment of “Fun Facts from the Library Survey”!

As a reminder: each month, we’re sharing some bits and pieces of information from the 2015 survey of WPLC libraries about the digital collection.

The survey asked librarians what percentage they felt should be spend on each format in the collection.  The survey was clear:  the majority of respondents felt that the most money should be spent on ebooks, followed by audiobooks.  24% of respondents indicated that more than 50% of the funds and 65% indicated that 26-50% of the funds should be spent on ebooks.  1% of respondents indicated that more than 50% of the funds and 37% indicated that 26-50% of the funds should be spend on audiobooks.
Music and Video did not fair as well.  27% of respondents felt that we should not spend anything on video, while an additional 28% felt we should spend 1-5%.  32% of respondents felt that we should not spend anything on music, while an additional 34% felt we should spend 1-5%

Based on this information, results from the patron survey and usage information, the Digital Collections workgroup recommended that we discontinue purchasing music and video and focus the collection on audiobooks and ebooks.  The Steering Committee approved this recommendation, and it will be implemented in 2016.
